Durante todo el Proyecto de Extensión de Vida (PEV) de la CNE, que tuvo tres etapas y cuyas primeras tareas comenzaron a desarrollarse en 2007, la ARN llevó a cabo el control regulatorio del mismo, que abarcó la evaluación de la ingeniería de las modificaciones y los reemplazos con impacto regulatorio (en la seguridad nuclear y radiológica, las salvaguardias y la protección física), y la inspección de su implementación, poniendo especial énfasis en las tareas relacionadas con los aspectos de seguridad. El PEV de la CNE constituye un hito regulatorio en Argentina y a nivel mundial - es la tercera central nuclear de tecnología CANDU en realizar el proceso de reacondicionamiento, lo cual le permitiría operar por un lapso de hasta 30 años en un segundo ciclo de vida, y es el único proyecto, hasta el momento, que incluyó el reemplazo de los generadores de vapor. Para ello, la ARN desempeñó un rol fundamental como regulador, orientado a garantizar la seguridad radiológica y nuclear durante las tres etapas del proyecto, incluyendo la Puesta en Marcha hasta alcanzar el 100% de Plena Potencia, verificando el cumplimiento de la normativa y de la documentación mandatoria. La obtención de esta Licencia de Operación para el Segundo Ciclo de Vida de la CNE evidenció el cumplimiento de los requisitos regulatorios establecidos por la ARN, y da continuidad por 10 años más a la generación de energía y la producción de cobalto 60 para el mercado de radioisótopos de uso medicinal e industrial.
