AGROINDUSTRY ENABLES PUBLIC AGENCIES ECUADOR AND COLOMBIA IN REGULATION OF BIOTECHNOLOGY

shared national experience in regulating gene products edition.
Monday June 3, 2019
The Ministry of Government Agribusiness, developed training activities in
biotechnology regulation in two Andean countries, Ecuador and Colombia,
through the technical team of the Biotechnology Directorate, under the
aegis of the area of Food and Bioeconomy, marking the international
leadership of our regulatory system.
In the Republic of Ecuador he gave a training course under
the "Implementation of National Biosafety Framework" project. The event,
which took place in late May in the city of Quito, included professionals
from various public and private institutions of that country.
It is clear that the National Advisory Commission on Agricultural
Biotechnology (CONABIA) in 2017 provided training to regulators in that
country, acting as Reference Center of the Food and Agriculture
Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Ecuadorian authorities, under its
satisfaction with that precedent, requested deepening this new activity
which was conducted with support from the Inter-American Institute for
Agricultural Cooperation (IICA).
Training included assessment exercises biosafety applied to genetically
modified crops herbicide resistant soybean insect resistant corn.
Moreover, Ecuador has recently issued a regulation by which it is clarified
that the regulation of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) in that
country applies only to products that do not have foreign DNA. Thus,
Ecuador would join other Latin American countries like Argentina, Brazil,
Chile, Colombia and Paraguay who have the same approach. Under this, the
training provided by Agro-industry analysis included two model products
obtained by gene editing cases.
In continuity with the previous activity, Agribusiness team moved to
Colombia to provide a workshop at the Colombian Agricultural Institute
(ICA), entitled "Implementation of the regulation on technical Innovation
in Plant Breeding, Argentina Experience". The activity was aimed at
officials and technicians from the Ministries of Health, Environment and
Agriculture, as well as academic institutions and research centers.

During the same he was exposed on national experience in regulating gene
editing products, also providing training in the analysis of these
products. The activity was requested by the authorities of the ICA
considering that Colombia recently issued a regulation on the subject very
similar to that of Argentina, which is currently preparing to apply.
These meetings are in addition to others that are being made in different
countries of our region, in which collaboration is paid for the purpose of
having regulations scientific, reasonable and harmonized for gene editing
applied to agribusiness base, taking advantage of the pioneering experience
that Argentina has accumulated in the last three years.
