WHEAT: HOW TO PLAN A STRATEGY OF EFFICIENT PLANTING

This week begins the planting of wheat in a context of high expectations by
recent estimates of the Rosario Board of Trade (BCR) indicating an increase
in the intended surface and increasing technological investment. In turn,
forecasts predict a beneficial climate throughout the campaign.
In this context, it is crucial to consider some aspects that affect the
results. From the INTA ensure that proper selection of the variety and date
of planting, combined with proper fertilization make an appropriate
strategy to help improve culture results and anticipate the next.
Jorge Fraschina INTA Marcos Juárez-investigator, Córdoba-, "wheat is the
option of more widespread winter in domestic agriculture for its many
benefits." He said: "When deciding planting are some things to consider
that may change the result of the crop and the next."
While acknowledging that some are not under the direct control of the
producer or consultant, as the occurrence of rain or high and low
temperatures at critical moments for the definition of both crops, there
are other aspects that can exercise control and that it worth considering.
In this regard, Fraschina stressed the need to "consider the expectation of
performance according to the production environment", for which he said it
is important to choose a wheat variety and planting date for each case, as
well as discuss the quality wheat to be produced.
In turn, he referred to the widespread problem referred to the need to
correct the deficiency of nutrients, mainly nitrogen, phosphorus and
sulfur. In this sense, he explained that the current focus on systems with
continuous soybean in the north central region pampeana requires crop
rotation benefit of the sustainability of the system and, in this context,
wheat-soybean sequence represents an alternative promissory.
He also stressed the importance of adapting the fertilization strategy in
expectation of performance, depending on the quality of the
environment. "The idea of quality environment for the wheat-soybean
sequence necessarily considered several agronomic as combination
ground-climate region, years of rotation, nutrient availability in the
system, the presence of napa, among others."
Anyway, Fraschina considered "relevant" to analyze the availability of
water stored in the soil at planting wheat.
"It is important to know the behavior expected of varieties against the
main diseases of each region," said coach Marcos Juarez who is not a minor
detail considering the susceptibility observed in released cultivars
against diseases difficult to control as 'scab' and 'black stem rust or'.
Another varietal characteristic to consider depending on the production
environment, according to Fraschina, is the likely excess stover that could
hinder a quick and good implementation of the second planting soybeans.
He also recalled the close relationship between planting date of soybean
yield and its expression: "We recognize the importance of occupation of the
lot by the outcome of wheat and wheat-soybean sequence."
He recommended: "The time of earing-anthesis of wheat should occur
immediately after the last frost weather in each region." This has to do
with the need to position the critical period of cultivation to cooler
temperatures possible in the absence of frost, and the grain filling with
not so high temperatures.
Is that, according to Fraschina, when earing-anthesis in wheat has
relevance to the culture results, but also for the next crop. Consequently,
he stressed the importance of earing-anthesis date, temperature by
influences the wheat harvest opportunity and the chance to soybean
planting, which could change the result of double cropping.
"The knowledge available on the performance of wheat varieties in the
planting period-earing and programs available such as CronoTrigo or
Progsit- allow better choice of cultivars cycle characteristics that
promote double cropping," he said.
As frost, advised to consult the web site AgCl University of Buenos Aires
or SEPA INTA online tools that provide updated weather information.
In the case of the election of soybean cultivars on wheat stubble, the
coach said that "there is no doubt that the cycle, growth habit and its
relationship to the structure of attainable crop in each region are
relevant aspects to anticipate suitable intercept radiation and locate the
critical grain filling period before the occurrence of frost ".
"The wheat is characterized by the contribution of the stover, for its
homogeneous distribution and retention in the soil surface, as well as its
effect on annual weeds" detailed, while stressing the contribution of
organic matter carried out by the system wheat root in the ground, with
direct impact on the ability of infiltration of rainwater.
As for the efficient use of available resources, Fraschina indicated
that "the sequence wheat-soybean emerges as one of the options of interest,
even considering the lower yield of soybean second seed for the possible
delay of the date planting. "
