MENDOZA ADDS TO AIR QUALITY MONITORING

Tuesday 17 September 2019
Along with the National Technological University, Regional Faculty of
Mendoza (UTN-FRM) and through its Group of Atmospheric Research and
Environment (GEAA), we launched the Open Seneca project measurements of air
quality in the city of Mendoza. The activity, which is part of the week of
sustainable mobility, took place on the esplanade of Mendoza Regional
Faculty and initiated environmental awareness initiative.
From the temporary transfer of ten mobile sensors particulate material
developed by the University of Cambridge, student volunteers from the UTN
will perform circuits measurements using bicycles and recording the levels
of air quality as they circulate through the streets of the city. These
data are then incorporated into a map of the city, being able to get a
picture of pollution thereof. The data will turn to turn the global network
of air quality.
The project envisages that during the months of September and October, ten
teams are delivered to student volunteers from the UTN FR Mendoza and
traveling on their bicycles various areas of Mendoza, in order to achieve a
good geographical coverage.
During the meeting, John Trebino, undersecretary Control and recomposition
He explained: "As part of the week of sustainable mobility and continuing
the Open Seneca project, we work together with the UTN and the Ministry of
Environment of Mendoza because we believe in these spaces can link citizen
participation, academia and youth, while promoting environmental awareness
and clean and sustainable mobility. "
Trebino added that "the Secretary Bergman aims to generate policies which
environmental education is fundamental". While adding: "Complying with the
ODS and understanding that our natural resources are not infinite, we can
leave future generations a better planet. In that sense, data measuring air
quality are essential for decision-making and public policy design but are
also critical for awareness of our choices as citizens ".
For his part, Humberto Mingorance, Secretary of Environment of Mendoza; He
said: "This virtuous circle of actors involved (international, national and
provincial) is useful as it will increase the mass of information which can
then make public policy decisions."
This study pollution of the city of Mendoza is complemented by measurements
GEAA own group and application of dispersion models. Given the shortage of
permanent environmental monitoring equipment, these economic sensors
provide an opportunity to obtain adequate space sensing, combined with
local models, allow to good quality environmental information in Mendoza.
Open-Seneca is a project that aims to create a global network of sensors
air quality public assistance to measure their exposure to air pollution
and create awareness about exposure to pollution levels and a change of
collaborating and reporting behavior and policy management air quality.
Activity also participated José Balacco, dean at UTN FRM; Miriam Skalany,
Director of Environmental Protection Mendoza; Roberto Puliafito, director
of the Research Group Atmospheric and Environmental UTN; Norberto Vila and
Leonardo Di Paolo, the undersecretary Control and recomposition of the
Nation.
