NEW EDITION OF THE NATIONAL FESTIVAL OF ALCAUCIL PLANTENSE

It was successful in the center of the capital Buenos Aires, giving
continuity to an annual celebration that reflects the perseverance with
which a group of producers Platense green belt drives the resurgence of a
crop son of Italian immigrants.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Nation was
present at the 13th National Fair Alcaucil with an institutional stand
organized by the Food and drinks aimed at spreading properties alcaucil and
characteristics of production, and simultaneously promote
initiatives: "Geographical Indication Alcaucil Platense", "our garden" and
the campaign "More fruits and vegetables."
The exhibition was held on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th October at the
Moreno square, heart of the city of La Plata, with explanatory visits,
cultural activities and a food court where preparations included as the
main ingredient tasted the alcaucil: paella, crepes, pies, cakes and
drinks, among others.
Producers were present offering fresh artichokes, canned and seedlings for
family orchard, and there were also cooking classes with recommendations on
ways to consume the alcaucil in different dishes.

It should be noted that the areas of greatest production of this vegetable
are around the capital Buenos Aires, Rosario, Santa Fe and in some
localities of Mendoza and San Juan. La Plata and its surroundings, called
Platense "green belt", account for 97% of the provincial acreage alcaucil,
where 60% of national output is generated. The activity is mainly developed
by a group of families seeking to combine efforts and resources to grow
alcaucil consumption in the domestic market and can also develop an export
market.
National agricultural portfolio gave recognition to the production of
alcaucil in the area, through the granting of Geographical Indication
(GI) "Alcauciles Platenses" by Resolution No. 31 / 2016. From the point of
view, the use of these seals is aimed at consolidating a competitive
strategy, meeting the expectations of those seeking greater naturalness,
authenticity and quality of the food they buy. From the social angle
productive and generates more work, more production and more value added in
origin.
The artichoke is a seasonal product that the last weeks of winter appears
on the market between August and September, months when the crop is at its
best, although some varieties can be found from May to October.

In addition to their appealing flavor and smooth consistency, alcaucil
makes contributions that promote the welfare and human health. It is one of
the vegetables with high fiber content; has high content of magnesium,
potassium and phosphorus, also it contributes iron and calcium, and
vitamins A and C, in addition to antioxidants.
The annual performance of the National Fair synthesizes and reflects the
work undertaken several years ago by growers of this tasty thistle close
relative, who begins to have increasing presence in an eager market of
novel flavors and culinary preparations.
