ENVIRONMENT AUSTRALIA MET WITH EXPERTS TO STRENGTHEN AREAS MARINE PROTECTED AND THEIR COORDINATION WITH FISHING

During the mission, experiences were shared with the Government of that
country, which today protects 36% of their marine waters. Wednesday 08 May
2019. The Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development Office, by
Sergio Bergman, participated in a mission in Australia to meet and share
lessons on the design and implementation of marine protected areas and
their articulation with the fisheries sector . -Of the Argentina delegation
participating national director of environmental management of water and
aquatic ecosystems, Javier García Espil- also includes representatives of
the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship, the National Parks
Administration, the Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture, the
Federal fisheries Council chambers and fishing. Australia is of particular
interest in having a similar to that of Argentina, a federal government
organization, attributes outstanding marine biodiversity, heavy use of
maritime space with other activities -Fishing type, hydrocarbons, tourism,
etc. latitudinal location - and creating a comprehensive national system of
marine protected areas covering 36% of its maritime spaces. During the
mission, meetings with Australian agencies Environment, National Parks,
agribusiness, fisheries, local governments, chambers of commerce, academics
and researchers from that country were made. Espil Garcia, who represented
the National Environment Secretariat, said that "marine protected areas
contribute to the conservation of biodiversity in a context of
environmental management of maritime areas". In that regard, he stressed
that "Australia is a leader in the field, which has overfulfilled global
commitments and currently protects 36% of its marine waters country. Learn
from their experience will enable us to strengthen our National System of
Marine Protected Areas. " Regarding exchanges with experts from the oceanic
country, the official said that "coordination between agencies and levels
of government, especially with the fisheries sector is critical to the
success of marine protected areas". "While pursuing different objectives
and use different tools, it is possible to achieve synergies that reconcile
the interests of conservation and development of economic activities that
contribute to sustainable development," he concluded. Creating a network of
marine protected areas in Australia had a strategy of identifying areas of
high conservation value based on bioregions, scientific studies and
extensive consultative process involving local governments, fishing
associations and other potentially affected , civil society, indigenous
peoples and academia. In the meetings held these issues were addressed, as
well as instruments for managing marine protected areas -plans management,
biodiversity monitoring, control and surveillance, education, information,
and so on. Argentina's delegation also included representatives of the
Association of Coastal Fishing Vessels, the Chamber of Fishing Vessel
Owners and Freezers of Argentina, the Argentine Chamber of Jigger Fishing
Shipowners, the Council of Argentine Fisheries Firms, Glacier Pesquera S.A.
Pesquera and Buenavista S.A. From Australia, they participated officials
and members of National Parks Australia, the Organization of Scientific and
Industrial Australian Research (CSIRO), the Australian Authority Fisheries
Management (AFMA), the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources
Corporation Research and Development fishing (FRDC), the National
University of Australia, Parks Victoria, the Victoria fisheries Authority,
the Chamber of Seafood Industry Victoria and Deakin University. Australia
This country has one of the three largest maritime areas of the world.
Beginning in 1998, it has developed the ordering of the various uses of
maritime areas with the establishment of a maritime policy and the
beginning of a process of marine spatial planning. Currently has 58 marine
protected areas in waters beyond national jurisdiction, occupying 3.3
million square kilometers; plus other protected areas in coastal areas by
local states. Commercial fishing is limited volume but high value
productions. It is estimated to generate revenues of 3,000 million
Australian dollars and employs 15,000 people. Faced with evidence of
overexploitation, in 2005 the country carried out a restructuring activity
with new management strategies. They apply instruments similar to those
available in Argentina -cuotificación fisheries, vedas, control and
surveillance, research, among many others.
