HYDROELECTRIC COMPLEX MODERNIZES BIG JUMP
Argentina and Uruguay will renew the Binational Hydroelectric Salto Grande
complex, with a loan from the Inter American Development Bank (IDB), for 80
million dollars. The modernization of the hydroelectric complex, located on
the border between the two countries, is a 30-year strategic plan to
maintain and extend its life, its production capacity, efficiency and
safety. With these works efficient interconnection between Argentina and
Uruguay will be guaranteed and millions of users with renewable energy will
benefit with quality service and efficient cost. The project will be
implemented in three stages: the initial phase will run from 2019 to 2023
and will be financed by the IDB loan. The work will include the
modernization of speed regulators turbines; renewal hydromechanical systems
weir and structural reinforcement of the spillway; the renewal of complex
systems lifting; modernization of electric auxiliary systems and control
systems; replacement of the main transformers and communication systems,
control, protection and compensation of reactive ring 500 KV transmission,
among others. Salto Grande is the main actor in the regulation of grid
frequency of both countries and 500 KV manager, which allows the flow of
energy between different energy markets and to the centers of consumption
up to 2000 MVA. The complex provides almost 50 percent of electricity
consumed in Uruguay and 3 percent of the energy demand in Argentina.
