A WORKSHOP ON MONITORING NATIONAL ACTION PLAN WAS UNDERTAKEN TO REDUCE BIRD INTERACTION WITH FISHERIES
In order to evaluate the results of the implementation of the approved by
the Federal Fisheries Council Plan.
Wednesday June 26, 2019
Convened by the Government Secretariat of Agribusiness, through the
Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture and the Government Secretariat
of Environment and Sustainable Development, it took place on 24 and 25
June, a follow-up workshop of the National Action Plan (PAN) to reduce bird
interaction with fisheries.
Birds PAN seeks to minimize the negative effects of fisheries on seabird
populations and environments on which they depend, through mitigation of
bycatch, generation, scientific research and training.
The meeting was headed by the Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture
of the Ministry of Government Agricultural Industry of Argentina, Juan
Manuel Bosch and the National Director of Environmental Management of Water
and Aquatic Ecosystems of the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable
Development of the Nation, Javier García Espil. In this context, Bosch
said, "We are no more watertight compartments, we must work together. It is
important that all yield something and everyone wins something to build on.
We have to be responsible in our developments and together take care of the
sea for development responsable".
During the conference attended by representatives of the Federal Fisheries
Council, provincial fisheries administrations of Black River, Chubut and
Tierra del Fuego, industry (CEPA, CAPeCA, ARGENOVA and ESTREMAR) Captains
(skippers), various research groups and academics (IIMyC, National
University of Mar del Plata National University of Southern Patagonia,
CENPAT, CADIC, CONICET, CIMAS), civil society (Aves Argentinas, Birdlife),
the Chancellery Argentina, the Argentina Naval Prefecture and Parks
Administration nationals.
For his part, Garcia Espil stressed the importance of "the sectors involved
we are looking for concrete measures to reduce the interaction. We must
give the answers that society expects us to develop fisheries caring
biodiversity and marine ecosystems."
The workshop was supported and co-financing of GEF-FAO project "Protecting
Marine Biodiversity: Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries and Protected Areas",
implemented by the Government Secretariat of Environment and Sustainable
Development of the Nation along with the Federal Fisheries Council , and
implemented with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
At the end, the importance of strengthening data collection (observer
programs National and Provincial Board), implementing effective mitigation
measures, and awareness of crews on its fundamental role in protecting
these species are highlighted on the basis of an exchange of scientific and
practical knowledge by those who know and live in the same ecosystem.
During the two days the activities carried out so far to complete the
Operational Plan Triennial 2017-19 PAN Birds, reviewing their objectives
and actions and operational planning for the 2020-2022 triennium reviewed.
This activity is framed in the context of the implementation of the project
promoted by both Secretariats of National Government, with activities such
as the Conference on Ecosystem Approach and the meeting of the Working
Committee on bycatch developed on 14 June at the INIDEP.
