INAM AND UN WOMEN CARRIED OUT THE "CONSULTATION WITH CIVIL SOCIETY 25 YEARS OF THE DECLARATION AND PLATFORM FOR ACTION"

Tuesday June 11, 2019
The National Women's Institute (INAM) and UN Women held yesterday at the
Golden Hall of the Legislature of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires
the "Consultation with Civil Society 25 years of the Declaration and
Platform for Action" in under the process of developing the comprehensive
national survey on progress and difficulties encountered in implementation
of the Declaration and Beijing Platform for Action.
The opening day of exchange was in charge of the Executive Director of
INAM, Fabiana Tuñez, and Anne Florence Raes, UN Women Representative in
Argentina. Next, the National Director of Communication, Information and
Dissemination of INAM, Carla Majdalani, made the presentation of the
working method and coordinated the exchange of civil society who worked on
the basis of the priority areas of action to achieve consensus around to
major gaps focused on addressing areas: inclusive, shared prosperity and
decent work; Poverty eradication, social protection and social services;
Eradication of violence, stigma and stereotypes and participation,
accountability and institutions with a gender perspective. The
contributions made by CSOs will be codified in a joint document to the
National and Regional Review Report.
From the National Institute of Women we consider fundamental the
contribution of organizations women's movement, civil society and trade
unions for this task and work together with UN Women, who is leading a
process of comprehensive reviews at national and regional level which aims
to assess progress in recent years and identify challenges and future
priorities.
The Declaration and Platform for Action Beijing 1995 (Beijing Platform for
Action) is the most visionary for the empowerment of women and girls
worldwide program. Created at the Fourth World Conference on Women held in
Beijing, China (known as the largest gathering of defenders gender
equality), the Platform for Action was adopted by 189 governments pledged
to take bold steps and strategic in 12 critical areas of concern: poverty,
education and training, health, violence, armed conflict, economy, power
and decision-making, institutional mechanisms, human rights, media,
environment, and girls.
2020 will mark 25 years since the Beijing Platform for Action established
how to eliminate systemic barriers to equal participation of women in all
spheres of life, whether in public or in private. Despite some progress,
the real change has been agonizingly slow for most women and girls
worldwide. Today, no country can claim to have achieved gender equality.
Several obstacles remain unchanged in legislation and culture. As a result,
women are still undervalued, they are working harder, earning less, have
fewer options and face various forms of violence at home and in public
spaces.
