CHALLENGES OF DOCUMENTARY PRESERVATION IN TIMES OF DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY

The meeting enabled the exchange of experiences and proposals regarding the
preservation of museological and bibliographical objects in digital media.
Monday June 3, 2019
The workshop "Technologies of digitization in memory institutions" was
issued at the Cultural Center of Science (C3) last Friday. The activity was
carried out under the National Historical Documentation System, which
depends on the Secretary of State for Science, Technology and Innovation.
The meeting discussed the possibilities and challenges of digitization
technologies for production, management and long-term preservation of
historical and cultural information. The presentations were given by
Fernando Boro, a member of the Historical Heritage Project of the Institute
of History Argentina and Americana "Dr. Emilio Ravignani" (UBA-CONICET);
and Matthias Butelman, who integrates the collective of free technology for
libraries, archives and museums, BiblioHack.
The emergence and increasing use of these technologies has numerous
advantages, especially with regard to remote access of information. At the
same time, it presents new challenges arising from the characteristics of
digital objects themselves and their changing environment, which also
affects critically access.
The workshop reviewed the main aspects associated with new tools and
favored the exchange, discussion and analysis of the impact of
digitalisation strategies in the work of professional institutions of
historical and cultural heritage.
During his presentation, Boro presented the most significant differences
between analog and digital storage media, and referring to the latter
pointed out the role of software as an inescapable translator for access to
information. Therefore, he stressed the need to adopt criteria for
technological monitoring, attentive to the cycles of obsolescence, when
planning the museum conservation.
In turn, Butelman posed a counterpoint between the current demands for
access and institutional capacities to share content online. In this
regard, he problematised instances within the preservation process that act
as bottlenecks and difficulties associated with the use of technologies
often produced abroad. Thus, he advocated the use of free software and
leveraging local resources linked to innovation and design.
Finally, Undersecretary of Institutional Assessment, Lucas Luchilo,
recalled that currently a new type of relationship is driven in the area of
the National State between substantive areas and addresses of systems to
promote synergy and develop specific solutions for heritage conservation.
He also invited those present to interact through the National Historical
Documentation System and to propose topics that should be incorporated into
future meetings.
